Admittedly, I'm a little off my rocker. In 2012, I purchased a Scion FR-S with the intention of keeping it until I can no longer drive it or I am forced to sell it to a family member.

Since 2012, I have been pondering what my next purchase will be to join the FR-S in the garage and act as a weekend car and occasional DD. After a lot of deliberation it has ultimately come down a 991 Carrera S or Nissan GT-R.

This is where I get fully crazy, since I actually like (yes, you read that correct) the GT-R styling and its rather subtle presence on the road (compared to a flashier car). I even went so far as to rent a Nissan GT-R for a day and absolutely loved it.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I find the GT-R as a perfect compliment to the manual FR-S, and although I hear the 911 is sublime, there is something to be said about having a more unique car. Call me crazy, but if the next gen GT-R sheds some pounds and finds itself a real interior (worthy of $90K)... i might just bite. The used market and depreciation have also been very kind.

What say you? Get used to this view, I love Blue or Matte Grey on this car.

Sounds like a perfect "winter beater" to compliment the FR-S! ;)

I like that color too.

Don't forget the inflated super car maintenance cost.

If you have the mean to buy / daily drive it. More power to you.

Moved on. I'm a one-car kind of guy. I went to something with two more cylinders, same number of turbos, and 65 more horsepower. And one million more torque.

How long did you have yours for and did you buy new or used (contemplating used... if the next gen comes out people will be dropping the older ones)? Give me a quick rundown of your ownership experience! Fuel the fire

3 years. A total blast. Actually faster than everyone says it is. It has a secret keyhole you will never need to use (you know what I'm talking about, CAcoalminer). Gets a ton of attention.

Very expensive to maintain. Check our RE070R2's on Tire Rack. Rotors and pads all around cost almost 10K. Diff service was like $1000 dollars. Makes a lot of noises. Clanks, rattles, brakes go chink-chink-chink over bumps (full floaters). Exhaust noise is very underwhelming. Needs a proper exhaust, needs nothing else.

It is righteously fast. The AWD just...knows, man. It just knows. Drove it 100 miles in 3 inches of fresh snow on ultra-super-extreme-batshit summer tires, still alive. Drove it through 1/2 mile of soggy, muddy, farmland during a crazy storm that knocked down trees and blocked roads so I could get home to my terrified puppy (if I had a video of doing that, it would have 28592385927495942582 views. I truly wish I had in car video, but alas, I was worried about other things). Took it like a champ, not a scratch on the car after a thorough cleaning. That was also on the summer tires.

What else would you like to know?

Thanks for the reply! I figured I could offset the maintenance costs by purchasing a gently used variety (depreciation is my friend). All in all, for a $100K car it seems to have less potential for a surprise $10K bill unless you are tracking it.

I think it would tick all the boxes I want to fulfill beyond the FR-S, namely: sense of occasion, torque, awd, tuner friendly. I would slap a mean exhaust on this and call it a day.

My only concern is how it would compare to a 911 Carrera S in ownership terms, and whether I would enjoy driving the Porsche more. I want to be able to take the car to work, and I want to be able to put miles on it without sweating bullets. Most of my driving pleasure is derived on empty backstreets late at night or canyon roads.

I also like the GT-R is a bit meaner, more mad-max like. I wouldn't worry so much if it was scratched.

Spill the beans. Are you looking to add to the stable or replace? What year, color and trim etc. GT-R do you want and have you had extended seat time in one?

You want the truth? I've daily driven a GT-R, and a 911 C2S Cab 6-speed.

You want the 911, bud.

Yep, I agree. If I can only have one the 911 has to be it. I just worry the FR-S will get zero seat time if I upgrade to a Porsche.

I'll ask you a non-ownership question. Mulling another day rental to celebrate a small life victory. Feasible options are Lotus Elise, SRT Viper, 911 Carrera S (7 speed). Public roads.

When you have a 911, you don't need seat time in anything else. You are one. You are content.

I can't wrap my head around the $/hr cost, its insane. I'm better off picking up a set of 17x9 wheels/tires for the FR-S and adding to the 911 fund.

So I'm in between a Carrera S (2012-2013) or a 2013+ Gt-R. I'm personally interested in a Gun Metallic or a Regal Red, no preference really on the interior.

I have spent some extended time in a GT-R, bout 4 hours driving time, and I agree with you on the interior part. Buuuuut I'm a sucker for a 911 so we'll see. It would be to add to the stable, but it depends if I finally decide to move to NYC or not...cause if I do, then just one car (if that) will be coming with me!

Have you seen the 911 50th Anniversary? I am so in love with that car!! LOVE those plaid seats and Fuchs wheels :D

You're definitely not crazy. The GT-R is quite an intriguing car.

Nice, hands down the 911 is the better purchase to make! I'm not a huge fan of the 50th Anniversary interior but I do like the package. If I could find a 2012-2013 optioned like I want (Carrera S, sport exterior package, sport exhaust, MT) I would bite, but that seems hard. I would most likely have to buy new custom order

The GT-R is just alluring, sure its rough around the edges and not perfect. That is the charm of a real sports car though. It feels less dainty and flies a bit more under the radar. I actually like red on it as well, although I won't own a red car.... Gun Metallic on a red interior is divine. Interested to hear how it pans out for you!
